Jim: I was thinking I might remove the oil breather, alternator, coolant manifold if required. The engine runs but I might end up parting it out. (e.g. it has a stainless steel coolant manifold)

David Bohanan: I might remove the right rear tire to help with engine removal. Engines will be removed/installed using a hoist from above. New engine is a rebuilt by me Jetta 2.0 ABA at 50ยบ.

Stuart MacMillan: Right. Ok. Carpet would not slide well on gravel! I have OSB so will put carpet piece on that. I wish I had one of those Crazy Carpet sleds.

I've never worked on gravel before so I'm being overly pre cautious with all this. The van rear tires are on blocks. I'd prefer not to use jack stands on gravel (with wood or plate steel under them). Safety aside, I need the van to remain in the same position; I'll be fabricating new engine mount brackets for the diesel carrier bars so once I align the engine with the body, I want as little body movement as possible.
