For flange nut.... where? When I did wheel bearings I had the torque wrench out for most of the job...followed most of the instructions from AB (thanks for all of the paying it forward you’ve done with your site, Bell Industries!) Roger that on many accounts- I’ve definitely gotten in the habit of doing lots of torque wrench stuff- have both clicker and beam. Looks like I’ll be purchasing the T3 sets of bolts and the tool- well worth the peace of mind- thankful for all the helpful advice- string on the steering wheel is a good reminder, too- I’m also thinking of taking pictures as I do things and re-reviewing them before the obligatory “victory lap”... What a head scratcher that opens up the necessity for not only new bolts all around, but man, my joints need gone over...not noisy, but real dirty... Gratefully, Dave

They need 32 ft. lbs. and the bolts need to be P.C. 12.9. The reason the one bolt broke is that it was the last to hold on as they all loosened. You need to check the flange threads to see if the holes were damaged, usually they will get opened up. If so they may loosen again. Proper hardware including the Schnoor washers and properly torqued these do not need Loctite. Loctite is a challenge since you will have grease getting on everything here. > > BTW, did you use a torque wrench on the flange nut? That is another common failure point? I had just recently done rear wheel bearings- since I cannot remember if this is the side I took loose or not, but it is completely detached- did I only thread one bolt in? because that’s all that’s broken- 1 bolt…and it wasn’t even threaded any longer… > > I disconnected the transaxle side and out came the whole axle- all 6 bolts came out but one was snapped- Do these need Loctite? > > I’ll be out and about looking for hardware today- I can not believe it was something so simple- and honestly, it just must have been my hurried “slap it back together” mentality- I honestly don’t even remember how I torqued it down… > > Hope everyone has as good of a Saturday as I’m having… > > Dave > > Sent from Mail for Windows 10 > > From: Dennis Haynes > Sent: Friday, October 27, 2017 9:21 PM > To: David Bohannan; vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: RE: Shift but no go > > Of the fast with no warning failures the usual suspects are the CV joints or an axle, the clutch disc center hub, and the input to main shaft coupling. Clutch feels fine- shift feels firm- but did a shaft break in there or something?!? Help! > > Dave > 85 manual schtuck > |
