In my application the standard factory oil heat exchanger lowers my oil operating temperature appx 15, 20 f at highway speed. (15/40 oil) That cooler operating temperature (typically about 190f) also holds the oil pressure around 60psi at 3200rpms.... After I swapped engine block to a 93 ABA Jetta 2.0 liter, I ran for a couple of weeks without the factory cooler, the way the 1.8l Cabriolet inline motor came from Vw, and I was seeing about 210f at speed. A major highway climb at speed was causing the oil to hit 230f, and at that temperature, the operative oil pressure did not please me. I re-used the ABA cooler from the donor motor. Now, the oil temperature stays good, but INTERNET rap says the factory coolers often fail..and the rap was right, I think. At least now I have an excuse to replace the coolant hoses now. I have run a few hundred miles with the coolant lines to the factory cooler connected... Nothing bad happens, other than less cooling, that I could see. Finding hoses to route coolant to the 1.8l head (and the cooler) I have on my hybrid inline, that required some creative routing...
