Subject: Re: broken gear box

Specifically, what are the symptoms of the 3rd-4th hub failure? Please give details.

I heavily banged my shift lever while moving some 12' pressure treated 2x12s and the transmission immediately was balky to shift out of third but sometime it shifts easy. Other gears are OK. it's not gotten any worse over the last 9K miles but sometimes it is really difficult. Rather than exert force I have found that quickly shifting out of 3rd with a light touch generally works OK without abusing anything. There is no noise or whine. I found the two plastic pads on the fork under the gear shift were broken and after replacing them it was more difficult to adjust the linkage than in the past.

I pulled the selector shaft from the transmission and it looked OK.

I'm wondering if I might have bent some of the internal linkage in the transmission rather than broken the 3rd-4th slider. How long does this slider last after first being noticed? This is a 91/1 DU box.

Thanks, Ed
