The OP said he was replacing a Vanagon 4 speed with a Subaru 5 speed. The "diesel starter" is an upgrade starter setup that uses a vw diesel car starter with a small adapter plate to mount it to a boxer tranny bell housing. Most diesel vans sold in the USA had 4 speeds by the way.
