It is always amusing to hear all the chatter about the cold in Florida,
California, Texas whenever it occurs, and it does occur almost every
winter, if only briefly. A year ago this time I was camping in Joshua Tree
NP, and experiencing below freezing temperatures and freezing rain and
snow. I grew up in Texas. The NPR report today on it being cold in Austin
erroneously stated that it only gets below freezing in Texas "maybe every
five years." Yeah, right. That would be true for Brownsville, but not
Austin. Frozen fountains in Dallas are always good for the national news.
Guess what, they happen every year, as does a snowfall or two. The all
time record low in Dallas is 8 below F, and lows in the teens are regular
events in December and January. The average annual snowfall in Amarillo is
17", similar to that in many northern cities. Of course, in Dallas, if it
is 20 F for the high one day it may well be 60 F a day or two later.
