Yes, the ICM is gone but the valve is retained. Has to be some way to introduce bypass air to control idle, it's not done with the throttle plate like the old days.  So, everything is replaced except the fuel pump and restrictor, idle air valve, temp and coolant sensors, and fuel injectors.  Nice things are added like a custom ECU, knock sensor, crank position sensor, MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor, new waterproof connectors, and sealed relays. There is really nothing more you need to replace, this system will keep the engine running at maximum efficiency in all conditions and elevations.

You have to give them credit, they will not give up on the WBX. Not yet at least, but at some point it's not going to be cost effective, and your favorite VW shop will not be able to work on this engine management system either.

I think the idle control module goes, the valve is still used. In my experience the valves only when folks do stupid stuff or they get filled with engine oil after a burned piston.

i think GW mentions this on their web page but the WBX 2.1 idle control unit would be deleted.

There is speculation in a thread on the samba Vanagon forum regarding use of the new GW on a 1.9 WBX.
