Those who are thinking "crash-worthy".. consider the stuff that your van has in the rest of the interior...all of that will become lethal in the event of a crash. To be crash survive able, a "headache cage" like common commercial vans have or a completely and agressively empty van is actually needed. Think: at 75, the van suddenly stopped or starting to Endo or into multiple rollers...but all those spares, those beer mugs, that shovel...all that stuff is still going 75...lethal! Even a small poodle, thrown at your head at 75mph.. that would be bad. Are sure the 20 yr old latches will keep things contained? I think something not stock, mounted under the gas tank, that won't hurt, though propane tank seems asking for trouble...

I would not drive a van without a spare tire up front. The tire is part of the crash worthiness of these vans. I want all the protection I can get. Even if you have a rear mounted tire you can always leave the stock wheel in place.
