Dan, this doesn't seem like a likely factor to me, as all of the linkage was new and tight when the car was made, and I'm sure it shifted fine then. could be some air in the line, though there is a conventional Vanagon superstition that when you replace the forward cylinder the rear one goes sympathetically. It is more likely I think that they both deteriorate at the same time. If it gets worse, it will probably do so quickly. If it doesn't get worse anytime soon, it's probably not the slave cylinder.
