I think the topic could be opened up with exactly which engine is actually
being installed? e.g. what is the ID code on the block? Then, engine mount
angle; 50 degree or 15 degree? The former typically fits the engine below
the engine lid but a 15 degree mount can have its' advantages. Mount angle
chosen opens up discussion on exhaust and engine carrier (mount bar) design
and fabrication or adaptation of existing VW parts. Another great topic;
run the engine with the original TDI engine management (adapted to Vanagon
wiring) or a modified diesel fuel pump?
