Dunno if this works for a Synro, but yesterday I tried a very steep narrow curved driveway with black ice concealed under an inch or two of wetish snow with my AWD GM van..lost momentum and traction then the van became a sled.. sliding backwards with four wheels locked. I managed to get the right rear corner into the bank to avoid good backwards into the trees,, but there I was, without room to turn around, even if I could dump something under the tires (not studs)... I used the 2wd Vanagon trick...put on the e brake, which transferred the drive to just the front wheels which began spinning and let the front end rotate till it was around and downhill.... That let me attempt to creep down to the actual road, where I was very happy to see the abs was able to slow me enough to miss the mail guy, who just avoided being t boned, as he went by...Sheesh! If I stayed winters here in the nw, I'd certainly have studded tires... nothing much else will work when the roads are black ice..

I bought a 2004 Passat Wagon AWD this year, love it. Wish I bought one 10 years ago.
