In Europe the descendants of our Westies cost Eur 50k+ nowdays also. A small camper is just as complex to build as a large (if not more).

I had a VW T4 Westfalia full camper for some years - Canadian market model. The front motor in the T4 made the westy conversion more cramped, just like these. 

In my opinion the T3 Westy is the by far best small camper. It is also the largest vehicle I would want to drive in cities and try to park in Europe.

For a mid sized camper the Westfalia converted Ford transit is nice. (See link I sent in a previous email)
