Hi Neil, nice theory, but completely bogus. I drove well over 250k miles in my previous '84 Vanagon with the early small tank outlet with no pump noise until the fuel pump was on its last legs around 200k. Something else is causing the fuel pump to make noise. Therein lies the problem . . .

Interesting to hear your results. I hope it works out long term. Different thing but FWIW, my fuel pump makes noise on and off and has done so for many thousands of miles. In my case, I'm pretty sure the sound is due to the early style tank having a narrower ID outlet. Later tanks have a larger ID outlet.
