Don't let it drive you crazy -- fix it. Pull the tin off that side so you can reach the sender. Next time the light doesn't come on, stop right there. Leave the key on and to check voltage at the sender. If it's 12V, you have a bad sender. If it's 0V, you have a connection problem in the wiring between there and the panel. Often it's at the panel connector -- fold the connector open and very carefully tweak the springy contacts to have a bit more spring. Just a bit. If no cure, use your voltmeter to find where in the wiring the 12V changes to zero -- the transition point is the location of the problem.
