Rick. Ya, my comment was a little arcane and at best a clue for search terms in the archive. From what I recall, if the tach needle drops during a sudden power loss or engine cut out, that needle drop could indicate that the fault is electrically related. Re: "automatic transmission". Just some WAG'ing on my part but with an automatic transmission Vanagon, when coasting in Drive, does tach normally drop a little? Or, if engine cuts out due to an electrical fault, how does tach behave?

Re: gas cap. If excess vacuum is being created at the fuel tank, this might cause the pump to be quite noisy and engine to stall. BTDT on a hot day in Truly The Middle Of Nowhere Oregon. ;)

If air can pass through the small vacuum connection nipple on the fuel pressure regulator (blow gently), the regulator has failed. (broken diaphragm)
