My shot in the dark, would be that the engine is somehow responsible... could it be ~distributor noise in the wiring loom if the engine revs just a tiny bit ?

I know you can sometimes hear a ~sewing machine sound of an engine in the radio on some instances (not necessarily vanagons, but other cars) ? - Sean G
