GregM, David, Dennis: much thanks. Especially for the detail on shimming.
I'd wondered about differences between the barrel clamp at the throttle
lever and barrel clamp at pedal but didn't think about cable alignment at
that end.
Wow. Hard to imagine that part could be tightened far enough to split it.
But given Dennis' comment, since the hole position in the original pedal
barrel clamp is positioned closer to the lever, maybe VW also made the part
shorter with the assumption that it would never need servicing. (or be
subject to an untrained hand)
The cable alignment is something I recently became more aware of. This
cable runs through a custom bracket at the non stock engine. Keeping the
cable centred on the sleeve was always a bit "iffy" but the cable held up.
Recently, I noticed accelerated wear at the rear end of the cable which was
likely caused by repositioning it laterally while replacing the starter
motor. After replacing the cable, I used a riv nut to help keep the sleeve
square to the bracket and cable centred to the sleeve.
