GregM, David, Dennis: much thanks. Especially for the detail on shimming. I'd wondered about differences between the barrel clamp at the throttle lever and barrel clamp at pedal but didn't think about cable alignment at that end.

Wow. Hard to imagine that part could be tightened far enough to split it. But given Dennis' comment, since the hole position in the original pedal barrel clamp is positioned closer to the lever, maybe VW also made the part shorter with the assumption that it would never need servicing. (or be subject to an untrained hand)

The cable alignment is something I recently became more aware of. This cable runs through a custom bracket at the non stock engine. Keeping the cable centred on the sleeve was always a bit "iffy" but the cable held up. Recently, I noticed accelerated wear at the rear end of the cable which was likely caused by repositioning it laterally while replacing the starter motor. After replacing the cable, I used a riv nut to help keep the sleeve square to the bracket and cable centred to the sleeve.
