So as luck would have it, I actually found what is most likely a spare accelerator pedal barrel clamp; it looks the same as the old broken part. It's much shorter than the throttle barrel clamp and its' yellow coloured metal reminds me of those inexpensive clutch housing cross shafts. I can now totally see how over tightening that part would cause it to break.
