You’re right.
That’s what I get for doing it from memory. J

The Type 4 was used in the Porsche 911.
Believe it was the 912 which was a 4 cylinder...same as the 914.

There are 2 engines that came in the VW Van's from the factory, type 1 which is the upright Beetle engine and type 4 which is the Porsche designed pancake style from 411 series sedans. The Type 4 was used in the Porsche 911.
The type 1 came from 1100 to 1600 cc's and the type 4 was 1700-2000 cc's. The type 4 changeover was in 1972 models.

Yes, but VW came out w/ a pancake engine in the early 60’s for their Type 3 cars such as Squarebacks, Notches, Fastbacks, etc.

As Jim said, they
are all flat 4 engines. The earlier better known as the "upright"
configuration. The change
to the pancake engine came in later 1971 or 1972 there abouts....

I **think** "upright engine" refers to the fan layout (vertical fan and
blower housing) and not the cylinder layout (flat four for all VW
air-cooled). I know my 69 had the "traditional" layout with the vertical
fan attached to an alternator, like a beetle. Later buses had the flat fan.

There's a flat four in this beast, according to the seller. A
replacement, no doubt.

One of my favourite bread box years …. you still have the upright engine,
but have disk brakes on the front.
