Hi Jim. Not sure when VW changed from the "beetle" type of engine to the later one they used in the fastback and squareback vehicles of the time. On second look though, a 1600cc engine was probably the upright. Not sure if there was a difference in cc's in the later engine. Maybe it was the 1800? I can't remember the minutia. That later engine used in the last few years of the Bay's was a hot little engine that didn't seem to mind upgrades. I believe that is where the old story that it was a "de-tuned" Porsche engine came from.

I **think** "upright engine" refers to the fan layout (vertical fan and blower housing) and not the cylinder layout (flat four for all VW air-cooled). I know my 69 had the "traditional" layout with the vertical fan attached to an alternator, like a beetle. Later buses had the flat fan.

There's a flat four in this beast, according to the seller. A replacement, no doubt.

One of my favourite bread box years …. you still have the upright engine, but have disk brakes on the front.
