There are 2 engines that came in the VW Van's from the factory, type 1 which is the upright Beetle engine and type 4 which is the Porsche designed pancake style from 411 series sedans. The Type 4 was used in the Porsche 911.
The type 1 came from 1100 to 1600 cc's and the type 4 was 1700-2000 cc's. The type 4 changeover was in 1972 models.

Yes, but VW came out w/ a pancake engine in the early 60’s for their Type 3 cars such as Squarebacks, Notches, Fastbacks, etc.
