Yes … the “pancake” engine was introduced in the Type-3 first.

Not sure when VW changed from the "beetle" type of engine to the later one they used in the fastback and squareback vehicles of the time. On second look though, a 1600cc engine was probably the upright. Not sure if there was a difference in cc's in the later engine. Maybe it was the 1800? I can't remember the minutia. That later engine used in the last few years of the Bay's was a hot little engine that didn't seem to mind upgrades. I believe that is where the old story that it was a "de-tuned" Porsche engine came from. >>> >>> Dave B. >>> >>> >>> >>> -----Original Message----- >>> From: Jim. I know my 69 had the "traditional" layout with the vertical fan attached to an alternator, like a beetle. Later buses had the flat fan. >>> >>> >>> Jim >>> >>> >>> On Tue, May 1, 2018 at 11:27 AM ddbjorkman@verizon.net <ddbjorkman@verizon.net> wrote: >>> >>> There's a flat four in this beast, according to the seller.
