Hey ed,

We use an old school, almost first gen, Thule ski box on the roof during summer trips. I made a clunky roof rack to mount it. Next gen roof rack in the works.

We find the box useful. We store campchairs, bbq charcoal, canvas bucket, levelling/ bridging tracks. I try and keep the weight down. The bridging tracks are heavy though.

At camp, before I poor the top, I get the chairs and tracks out. We invariably park on ver uneven ground so I need the tracks to level the van.

Once that cargo is out, the top goes up. I’d advise, seriously, lift assist struts from jack Bombay to help lifting the top. Even an empty box up there make an unassisted lift hard.

And I mount the ski box as far back on the roof as possible, back so far as to just clear open rear hatch of van.

Having it back as far as you can reduces the effort in popping the top.

Alistair
