Probably the most thorough explanation on the topic is right here:  http://www.gowesty.com/tech-article-details.php?id=83 Rich San Diego

I have only had my 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Campmobile (silver tan, original waterboxer, four speed manual transmission) for ten years.  I have always considered the channels in the door to be blind passages, as I have never known air to flow from them regardless of how the vent lever is set. But they do not have foam in them.  I put the stick that my wife uses to tuck up the tent while I work it from the inside in there.  I also keep an umbrella and a club in there.
