Thanks for the responses! 

Yes I have replaced the tabs on the selector, and the shop did put the rear bracket in the forward location on the transaxle (just checked). I’m wondering if the problem has to do with the length of the shift rod, based on the exposed splines I’m seeing at the clamp where the mid section meets the rear one:
