So just to report back.....

Took the westy in question to my local shop (lucky me. This fellow has vanagon experience) to have the tires rotated and upper control arm movement checked. No play was felt at either arm at bushings to long bolt but indeed they are very very stiff. No "notchy" feel, yet, but i can only assume the insert in each has failed.

Onwards and upwards to Whiteline UCA bushings from T3 (once my back is better)

Neil.
