This is just one example but on Tencentlifes (Chris Corkin) engines, he routes the hoses up above the engine case. e.g. image:

To the best of my knowledge, he doesn't install hose cover on those hoses.

i did a similar thing on my WBX. It took some thought, and the fuel pressure regulator reposition was one topic of that thought process, but it can be done.

Not saying its "right" or better than what VW did but my thinking is why even locate the fuel hoses near or on the engine case?
