I agree with Chris:  whisk broom.  So simple and effective for daily cleaning.  


Even when on the road, you can always find a self service car wash with a super strong vacuum for $1 to really tackle embedded dirt or big jobs.  Actually, stopping at little places like that in some small town is part of the fun of a Vanagon road trip; and usually, there will be a pretty good place for lunch just down the street.


I had a 12 VDC vacuum once...pretty pitiful.  Gave it away; never missed it since.

I keep a small whisk broom. Lighter, cheaper, gets the job done.
