I think I've got it now, but only miles will tell.
One more thing I forgot to write. In researching all the ways people fix
these I came across the thing again about "do not reset the trip odo while
the van is moving!" before I fixed mine the metal gear was turning very
freely and I experimented with resetting the trip odo while feeling the
load on that gear whether it was moving or not. I could not feel any
additional load on that gear no matter what I did. As soon as I started
depressing that button it took all the load off that gear rotating. no
matter how I let it go I didn't feel any grabbing or popping or anything
that seems like it could affect the gear or what connects to it.
