1986 with AT

Been in there twice before getting the plastic gear secured, this time it was the gray metal one slipping on the other end of the same shaft. I really didn't want to take the plastic gear off since I finally got it secured on the previous repair. I had also made a stop so that it or the whole shaft couldn't slide out in that direction.

So I slid that shaft back just enough that I could get the gray metal gear out of there. I put in in a vise and peened those collars around the shaft hole on both sides of the gear. when I went to slide the shaft back through it, it was very tight. I ended up using the vise to press it back in! I used a small socket to back up the plastic housing the shaft goes through and turns in. That went OK and the gear is on there tight.

The other thing I did this time was to rig up a way to test the speedo/odo off the van. I used a length of wire that fit in the place where the speedo cable goes and put the other end in a drill. That registered about 70mph on the speedo and I could check that all the gears were turning properly. If I had done that the previous time I probably would have found that the gray metal gear was not secure on the shaft.
