I did My own before I knew about JBrown & have since installed Several of JBs Relay Kits on other Vans

that I work on for Friends ~ Have to disagree with LAlofs comment that doing Your Own will be the Best > You

Might be able to build 1 as good as JBrowns but very doubtful You could build a Better 1 ~

I mounted My relays on a Little Shelf that VW provided where the Steering Column attaches to the Dash

Frame ~ From there it is very easy to find an existing Grommeted Hole in the front of the Cockpit area to run

the Wires to the Lights ~

Thanks. Jay Brown was the name I was looking for. So, just get the 2 headlight system? I think I like the relays inside. Above the glove box is a nice out of the way but accessible spot (well, almost, you should see how much stuff is in my glovebox). Where do the wires go through the front of the vehicle and can I put a couple of 12 gage wires through the existing hole? As far as my engine, it is a Gen. 5 around 2011, the current 8V model with the piston squirters. > > > Dave B. > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Neil N <musomuso@gmail.com> > To: ddbjorkman <ddbjorkman@verizon.net> > Cc: vanagon <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com> > Sent: Wed, Jul 4, 2018 12:15 pm > Subject: Re: Birthdays and Busses > > > > Along with Larry's comments, the area above the glove box is a good location for adding relays and what not. On my '88, I did what Larry suggests; new wire, fuse from battery to area above glove box, new wires to headlights. If you google Jay Brown, Vanagon, you might see his relay kit wiring diagrams for given years of Vanagons. Or just order some from him? ;) > > > Which generation Golf engine? The Mk2/3 VW inline engines have a 3 letter code stamped into a boss on the block located on the upper RH area nearer the flywheel end. Google should have images of that. > > > Neil. > > > On Wed, Jul 4, 2018 at 8:04 AM, ddbjorkman@verizon.net <ddbjorkman@verizon.net> wrote: > > > Now for Vanagon content. With all the recent relay talk, I think I will finally install headlight relays. But I have a question. My Westy (the Bus) is an '87, but I changed to the '84 2 headlight system due to the crappy light I was getting from the original 4 light system. Not knowing how far back wiring changes are for the different models, I wonder which relay system I would use, and the best setup. I heard someone's name mentioned as opposed to the usual vendors. Next, how do I determine the date of manufacture of my current generation Golf engine?
