17+ year lurker via the archives, haven't needed to post since my "Dealer Disaster" thread 15 years ago. 1989 Westy "Vanna White", I'm the original owner. Had a sudden onset cranks/no start/no spark situation a couple of weeks ago which the very generous David Beierl helped me work through as I was waiting for approval to rejoin the list. During that process I ordered a Bosch coil 00061, Bosch part # 0 221 122 349 (the green label one) from Autozone. First one did not work (but that may have been due to other factors), and tested Primary resistance 0.7 ohms (Bentley says 0.5-0.8), Secondary 4.16k ohms (Bentley says 2.4-3.5k). Because it didn't work and because the secondary resistance was out of spec, I returned it and ordered another, which I have just received. Vanna White is running now with the old coil in place, and I am deciding whether to keep the new coil for what Stan Wilder used to call the Paranoid Parts Department, or to return it. This newest one tests Primary resistance 0.8 ohms, secondary 4.22k, so secondary is still out of spec. So my questions are: - is 4.22k is too far out of spec to work - either to have kept her from starting during my diagnostic process earlier, or in the long run to keep her running well? - for those of you buying/stocking coils, is it common to get secondary resistance out of spec on new coils these days, making it necessary to try numerous times before getting a good new part? I have a 280Z that took me 3 tries to get a working alternator, so I know that happens too often now, but didn't know about coils? The spade connectors on these new coils are much thinner than the original, so some tweaking of the female ends was required to get a good connection with the double connector for Terminal 1. Frustrating. The original problem at this point seems to have been cleared up by cleaning up connections, all original parts still in place, though time will tell.
