I do see Stacy's point though. On my '88, this is how the tank looked before replacement:

Maybe it could've been saved but I also replaced that tank and fittings.

The OP lives in Canada. If they live back East, they could be dealing with a really rusty tank.

i.e. in Vancouver BC on the west coast, where I used to live, the roads weren't salted nearly as much as they'd see in Toronto ON. I posted pics for a reference POV.

If the Westy owner lived in an area with a more moderate climate, not near the ocean, maybe their tank would be in much better exterior condition?
