The shunt should be on the negative side of the battery, so doesn't necessary need to be screwed down. It could be supported solely by the ground cable, which should be at least 4- or 6-gauge.

The monitor reads through a cat 5 or 6 cable as I recall, so can be mounted almost anywhere. I usually mount them in the stove faceplate in Westies.

The solar controller, no reason to be close to the monitor.

Depending on panel output and cable length, you might want to use 8- or 10-gauge cable for best results.

For the monitor, the shunt. I know how to install, etc, but the only place I have to keep it is in the space next to the battery under the driver’s seat. My concern is all the exposed metal and that it won’t be screwed down. So any recommendations. I have not seen any enclosures for them. > > Question 2. Placements. I was going to put the battery monitor in the wall of the rear cabinet/closet. I was going to put the solar controller on the cabinet side wall behind the driver seat. Any reason these should be closer together or that these are not good places to have them? > > Question#3. My solar kit came with a pair of wires going from the controller to the battery, but they have large alligator clips. I was going to just snip the clips off and put on some terminal connectors. Or would it be better to replace with two new wires? If the latter, what wires should I use? > > Thanks in advance! > > Jeremy, ‘87 Westy > > Sent from my iPad
