Thanks all;
I now know what is wrong. Deciding on trying a brush change or tossing a new one in there. Supposed to leave on Wednesday AM. Decisions, decisions. If I go for the new one, I'm keeping to old one to experiment on. Brush change doesn't look all that complicated. As long as my clumsy fingers comply.
Thanks to all for the helpful info. Dennis, I know about the excitation circuit, now I know why it works!
Dave B.

Dang!! Alt's not doing it's thing. Voltage (although above 12V) goes down when running. This has been an expensive summer. Rear seals failed and a complete rear break/seal job followed. Missed a camping trip with the kids (adults now) already, and am supposed to head out to Elmira NY on Wednesday. Oh well, pull out the wallet again and get a new alternator. That was easier to do when I was working, put in some OT to help, but now a retiree and it's tougher. Thanks for listening to that. I am very happy I made it to this point and can still work on the bus.
BTW. Should I give it a couple of good whacks just to see what happens? Works on generators :o))
Dave B.
I might just whack it anyway
