Hey,

Throw a new set of brushes in it. Around 20-30 bucks. It’s worth a try. Not saying other things aren’t possibly awry with the alternator but heck, I’d do brushes.

Assess the commutator if you can see much of it after brush pack out. It might be worn out. Also check radial play on the bearings. Ie yank on the pulley up and down.

Any movement means bearings shot. And you can replace the bearings if you’re up to it.

I’ve been able to replace brushes a couple of times before commutator got worn out.

I’ve also soldered in new brushes to the brush pack, even cheaper but less easy.

Alternately, if you have local auto electrics shop around, they can rebuild your alternator; brushes, bearings, commutator. And they will check the diodes too.

For some reason I prefer that to buying a remanufactured unit. But that’s just me.

Alistair

This has been an expensive summer. Rear seals failed and a complete rear break/seal job followed. Missed a camping trip with the kids (adults now) already, and am supposed to head out to Elmira NY on Wednesday. Oh well, pull out the wallet again and get a new alternator. That was easier to do when I was working, put in some OT to help, but now a retiree and it's tougher. Thanks for listening to that. I am very happy I made it to this point and can still work on the bus. > BTW. Should I give it a couple of good whacks just to see what happens?
