Subject: Everything peachy with vanagon.com foil replacement except...
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8"

(SPOILER AERT--I am not claiming that the foil replacement is bad, just looking for advice)

Installed the vanagon.com south Africa product. Everything fine, got my turn signal indicators back immediately. No longer had to treat the instrument cluster like a human brain to get it back in the van in working order. Love the LED switchover.

But... not long after the install, the temp LED came on and stayed on. This happened about every four times the car is run, and when it happens, required going into the hatch and pulling the connector out of the sensor, then replacing. Good for another four drives or so. May come on upon startup, may wait until I am on the road.

Swapped out for a spare, new coolant level sensor. No luck. Pulled the connector and shorted the pins. No luck. Pulled the cluster, reset ll the T14 connector contacts. No luck. Checked the ground. No luck. Swapped the temp gauge with a known good one from a 1991. No luck (worth noting that the gauge in the car had been re-capacitored by David B not so many years ago, and had been working perfectly).

??

Contacted Vanagon.org, they are contacting the mfr. I am figuring the test procedures they recommend are going to be above my pay grade. Any notion of some practical tests that might localize the failure to something?

Jim
