The very first repair I ever did on a Vanagon, on the second day I ever drove one, was fixing one of those rheostats on my sister's kitchen table in Edzell Scotland.** I've fixed several with poor contact internally (been too long to remember precise details). If the resistance wire is broken/melted you can't do anything though in principle the entire rheostat is replaceable.

**'84 Westy with ~85k at the time. During that three weeks I experienced can't crank when hot, genuine flutter-induced Vanagon Syndrome, and the 3-4 synchro hub crack. And I'm here to tell you that you can drive a 1.9l Westy forty miles through Scottish countryside and small towns in fourth gear, if you're willing to burn up your clutch.
