I'm not looking at it now, but I recalll that Bentley says that the upper parts of the shifter mechanism, I guess meaning the parts you would assemble through the cabin from above, are to be lubricated with lithium white grease so as to limit potential staining to the interior. Don't know about down below, but I use white grease spray there, too, because the inevitable drips onto the spare tire are going to end up on you the next time you have to remove it.

Grease of any kind is a magnet to and keeper of dust and dirt, it isn't just moly. With grease you have to limit access to dust and dirt. The good thing about it is that once in place, grease don't move around much, and grit that falls on the outside of two surfaces tends to stay there.
