Subject: Wheel Squeal? Prevent a Tow
Content-type: text/plain; charset=utf-8

Hi listers,

I’m concerned about a development of a squeal in my 85 vanagon.

They are so hard to track down! I’d love some ideas on places to start to look for a fix before I have a problem.

We started to notice a intermittent high pitched squeal. It seemed unrelated to anything specific. It did not seem to stop or start with breaking. It didn’t seem to change pitch when going faster or slower. it didn’t seem to start and stop as the van leaned. Sometimes I would think a factor would be identified but then it would not hold up. I thought maybe it was belt squeal from the engine but it only happens when van is moving at speed.

In park after warmed up the belts are quiet.

Only tips I have is if I had to guess it sounds to me like it is coming from the passenger wheel.

And, last night after a 10 mile trip from birthday dinner out, at about 50 miles a hour average speed, I noticed that the passenger wheel was warm, not hot, mostly warm when I put fingers in the holes around the outer edge of the original rims.

The other three wheels felt cold.

The wheel was not hot, just warm. I only thought to mention because all others were colder.

And driver’s are not noticing any thing with driving or breaking.

I’d love some Ideas on where to start figuring out the problem.

Tips and thoughts are greatly appreciated.
