I'd be interested in the wheel options, Dennis. There's many places that
tell you what fits... but they're mostly concerned with looks and fancy
alloy wheels.
I'm not very concerned about looks, it's more about upping my gear ratio to
put my rpms down, and secondly, perhaps add some stability over the -70
aspect 14"s.
I run a tintop 5sp, but often loaded to 5000lbs and often on rough
roads...
Price is a concern.. junkyard wheels are being considered.. Thanks Don

The original 185R14 tire is about 25.6” dimeter. Going to a 225/60-16 0r
225/55-17 will bring you to ~26.6”, Load indexes for these sizes are
typically 98/97 with the XL versions going to 102/101. The original
205/70-14XL upgrade was only 97.
I can recommend some wheel options if interested.

Thank you Dennis
This starts to sound some what complicated in that I have the 93 Subi
engine and the drive train / wheels are stock 87 VW
I do think that at my normal hi way speed of 65 MPH it could be geared a
bit higher and perhaps a bit better gas milage … and I often skip 1st
gear it is too low
My primary interest is being able to get a tire with the correct load
factor for the heavy Camper while not spending any more than needed
And need to do it in the near future by the middle of December if we are
going out over the holiday The current tires are showing crack lines on
the face

There are many options for tires and rim sizes alone do not force you into
a larger diameter. Probably a more important consideration though for
changing dimeter is the effect on braking. That said, for many carefully
selecting a different diameter can be used for fine tuning engine RPM/Mile
to better suit some needs. More importantly going to a different size wheel
provides more options to get onto a modern tire design and enjoy some
ride-handling capabilities that a properly set 4 wheel independent
suspension can offer.

what vanagon do you have? tintop or full camper?
what engine do you have? are you aware of getting 16" rims and tires will
tax on the power of your engine?
