I have had mice come in through the air intake for the engine, and nest in the air cleaner. That is with an accessory oil cooler in the pillar, too. They also have ways of getting into the space under the cabinetry, but I haven't found those entry points. Since I started keeping Irish Spring soap bars in various places around the van, no mice have taken up residence. That may be coincidence rather than the soap being a repellent, of course, but ......... .
