This happens when the actuator motor stops partway through a cycle. The actuator rod can only slide in and out manually at the ends of the cycle.

How you get to it to disconnect the linkage with the door locked is a mystery to me as it's the actuator that's "jammed" and not the lock cylinder. But with luck it will come to life with the new battery.
