Its a rainy day here so why not a fun tire thread.

The short answer is:

If you are using 185R14 tires then YES they must be Load C or more to be rated to carry the weight.

If you are using a wider and/or taller tire then NO, they don't necessarily have to be Load C or more to be rated to carry the weight. Just check you door sticker if you have an 87 or newer van as VW offered a wider tire option on later vans and these were NOT Load C or higher tires.

It gets to be a complex topic if covered in depth.
