Found the culprit! That mystery sleeve that would not the torque converter go in was nothing but a bushing that was left behind by the last torque converter. I had to pick it out delicately, carefully, slowly. Now, finally, the TC can go in all the way properly. Thanks to all of you who were trying to help and were just as baffled as I was. Only after checking other trannies could I say, that that 'sleeve' does not belong. It's out now and all is well. God bless the List, Zoltan

Managed to have the troublesome shaft into position by standing the transmission upside down and by turning the final drives the same time. One more thing still did not allow me to install the torque converter. The main shaft has a sleeve around it and it is also way out. Now, I can't find reference of it in the book, so I don't know if it's a tube like shaft or just a sleeve. And you would like to know if it can be somehow moved deeper, so I can have the torque converter seated properly. Anyone? Zoltan

The center shaft is the one that actually transmits the power from the converter through to the sun gears for all motion. There are piston ring type seals on that shaft. If allowed to come out too far they do not readily go back in from the front. The auto section will have to be separated so the turbine shaft can be seated from the rear. You will know if you break the rings by the ATF getting into the final drive.

Hi to all,

I am trying to push the torque converter into place but the middle splined shaft won’t let me go deep enough. The center shaft is all the way in. The outer one is rock solid. The middle one is the one that is not going deep enough to be about same deep as the face of the big shaft. Now it’s more than half inch out and won’t budge. There has to be a way. I was trying to move the drive flanges or try switching gears, just as a wild guess.

So, the question is; what is the way to make the middle shaft go to it’s place?

Anyone?
