Subject: Whistling from rear end
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8"

Hi everyone. I've had a whistling noise coming from the rear of my 87 Westy, 2.1liter automatic, for probably a year now. It is intermittent but most noticeable during city driving.

I would have thought this was caused by metal components rubbing together, perhaps the emergency brake components touching the revolving components inside a brake drum. However, the pitch of the sound never changes and seems unaffected by speed. The whistling sound is in the mid-range, maybe about a middle C, neither particularly high or low. It seems to start and stop randomly.

An atypical sound like this is worrisome, but maybe it's just wind or road noise. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Thanks in advance, Rick
