I found that our family 1981 Rabbit with 1.6 NA and 5 speed tranny was acceptable (not dangerously slow) but then that was based upon my recollection of yesteryears' driving; driving styles were generally different! LOL. (read: in general a lack of attention and stubborn use of cruise control now seems to prevail)

My ideal diesel Vanagon would be the NA AAZ with 5 speed tranny. Oh, and a sunroof.
