Eric, As I mentioned previously the leak could be something besides the pan gasket. Seal for governor cover Seal set between the auto section and final drive, shaft seals or the where the two housings mate. There is a weep hole here for oil to escape if it gets past one of the seals. Can leak ATF, gear oil, or both. 2nd gear brake band piston-cover.

The brake band piston and governor seal can be done trans in place. The section seals cannot. If the seals failed from age- heat, hardening that is indicative that those inside are in similar condition. It may be time for that overhaul.
