Subject: Final Drive flange seals
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

91 Vanagon Auto 2.1

This weekend I replaced the final drive flange seals. The new seals didn't seem too tight around the shaft. Honestly, I don't know how tight a fit it should be. The drive flanges looked really good. No noticeable wear marks or rust at or near the sealing surface. The new seals were Elring p/n 063.655 (45x60x8) which I believe is the correct replacement for W 018409399. It's been raining since so I haven't really driven the car much to check for leaks. However, the cast iron is showing some signs of oil directly beneath the two drive flanges.

Could this just be gravity and wicking from left over oil from the previous leaking seals?
